Italy Summer 2018
In the summer of 2018 I had the opportunity to study abroad in Milan, Italy. With the support of Agnes Scott College and the Global Learning center I was able to plan my trip in detail, as well as apply and receive scholarship funding. At the University in Milan I took a course in The Global Economy, and one in Entrepreneurship. The Strategic Management/ Entrepreneurship course encouraged discussion of case studies of Italian firms to get familiar with the Italian entrepreneurial environment and deepen understanding of possible business models alternatives. The Business, Gov’t, & The Global Economy course focused on analyzing the key factors that affect the competitive position of a nation, by investigating the driving forces of trade integration along with how globalization is changing the macroeconomic scenario. Taking business courses in a country where small businesses are very common was not only interesting to me, but also inspiring.
Looking back to my experience in Italy, I realize that I learned so much about myself as a person. Studying abroad with only one other Scottie I definitely learned how to be more street smart, as well as became more independent. My experience was one for the books, and it definitely helped shape my learning of Business at Agnes in a worldy context.
My trip to Italy taught me the importance of being culturally competent as well as understanding how different things are of more value in certain countries. For example in my short time there, I would often see people spending time together and drinking coffee, and there was a coffee shop at every block. It gave me some encouragement in also making more time for my family and friends.
